People exercising at fitness gym

Having trained for over 40 years( yes I’m that old!) the holiday period is a great time to relax a bit but can also be a difficult time to get yourself back into training. One of the keys I’ve found is to not stop training altogether over Xmas but cut back on frequency and intensity. If you’ve been indulging it can be difficult to face doing your normal level of training….so don’t!

Doing something is better than nothing but once the festive season is over It’s time to get back in it.

With that in mind here are some practical strategies to get back on track:

1. Set a Goal

• Define a clear, realistic fitness goal for the New Year (e.g., run a 5k, improve strength, or lose a certain amount of weight).

• Break it into smaller, achievable milestones to keep you motivated.

2. Create a Plan

• Schedule your workouts like appointments.

• Start with shorter, manageable sessions to ease back into it.

3. Focus on the Benefits

• Remind yourself how good training makes you feel (improved mood, energy, and health).

• Reflect on how staying active counters holiday sluggishness.

4. Get New Gear or Try Something New

• Treat yourself to new workout clothes, gear, or apps.

• Try a new class or activity to make training exciting.

5. Recruit a Workout Buddy

• Training with a friend or joining a group adds accountability and fun.

6. Be Kind to Yourself

• Don’t expect to jump back in at full intensity.

• Celebrate small wins to build momentum.

7. Visualize Success

• Picture how you’ll feel when you hit your goals.

• Keep a reminder (e.g., a photo, quote, or journal) to stay focused.

8. Leverage the “Fresh Start Effect”

• Use the post-holiday period and New Year vibe as a natural motivator to reset and refocus.
